College Towns Fare Better in Economic Turmoil

PRIME LOCATION: As workers lament the loss of jobs in industries from agriculture to manufacturing, some regions have weathered economic shifts better than others. College towns have been especially resilient, according to new research from the Brookings Institution for The Wall Street Journal.

In an analysis of 16 regions where overall job growth was strong, half are home to a major university, including Athens, Ga., Charlotte, N.C. and Charlottesville, Va. Colleges offer tools and knowledge like 3D printing and workforce skills training to local industries.
