Makerbot Makes Big Bucks

Jun 19, 2013

MAKERBOT SELLS FOR $403M: We suppose that MakerBot could have printed a plastic pile of bucks. But instead MakerBot, a hero of the DIY community, made several hundred million dollars the old fashioned way--by selling to Minneapolis-based, Stratsys. The deal is for stock, which suggests that companies genuinely consider the deal a merger of strengths. MakerBot's 3D printers, which sell for a few thousand dollars, have been making inroads in Stratasys's business of selling $50K devices. MakerBot was founded in 2009 and has sold 22,000 printers since then. Details here on Quartz and TechCrunch. Official press release with all the corporate speak here.
