The Avenues' $40K education features tech galore

Nov 20, 2012

DECKED OUT: The Wall Street Journal looks at what a $41K tuition gets you at Avenues: The World School, a technophile's dream playground located in New York City's trendy Chelsea district. The campus, which just opened in September, is packed from ground to ceiling with things like iPads and audio-sensitive cameras. Not only do all preK through 12 students receive their own iPads, but from fifth grade on, they get their own MacBook Airs as well. (And you guessed it: all the tablets and computers will be replaced every two years.) Even $41K in tuition won't cover all of this; the school raised $75M from private donors before opening its doors. And there are plenty of memorable names here: Chris Whittle (of Edison Schools fame) is the CEO; Benno Schmidt (former Yale prez) is chair. Among its student body: Suri Cruise and other celebs who get their own special VIP drop-off lane--which is apparently causing some nightmarish traffic in the mornings.
