Edmodo Acquires Root-1

Mar 5, 2013

ROOT-1: Acqu-hired by San Mateo, CA-based Edmodo for an undisclosed sum. The Root-1 team, formerly based in Mountain View, will join the Edmodo team. Co-founders Manish Kothari and Ketan Kotahri will be working on "platform strategy and growth." Early Google employee, Vibhu Mittal, will lead R&D. And co-founder code wiz Adam Stepinski will join the engineering team.

Last we heard from Root-1, it was working on the OpenMinds platform that allowed anyone to upload, share and re-purpose a bank of questions and items for any kind of apps, websites, and games. This gave developers a bit of leeway to focus on the infrastructure and design while being able to use content uploaded by other third parties.

Of course, no Edmodo announcement is complete without a latest update on its figures. Its hockey stick continues to grow as it now currently boasts over 18 million users (10:1 student-to-teacher ratio, shares COO Crystal Hutter) and 400 apps integrated with its platform. The team itself has also grown to 70, with the addition of execs who hail from the likes of Mozilla, Pandora, and Facebook. More info in press release.
