The Chicago Public School district serves approximately 409,300 students through a network of 482 elementary schools, 71 charter schools and 122 high schools (FY2009-10).

Approximately 86% of the students are from low-income families; 12% have limited proficiency in English. Some 45% of the students are African American; 41% are Hispanic; 9% are white.

In FY 2007-2008, the district's capital expenditures were approximately $11,500 per pupil.
