Noodle Acquires Learning Management Startup, Lore

Mar 15, 2013

NOODLE'S NEW LORE: There are all kinds of fascinating threads to this story: First the facts: Noodle Education, the three-year old startup run by John Katzman, today acquired the technology platform built by Lore (formerly Coursekit). Lore is a learning management system (mainly for higher ed) with a lot of social features: Students can post assignments, updates and syllabi and share those with classmates.

This is technology acquisition. Lore founder, Joseph Cohen, and his team of seven others, will not be joining Noodle. Cohen was excited about the deal: "The Lore product will continue as is," he told EdSurge. "John is the best entrepreneur in the industry and he's building something special within Noodle. I think (Lore) is best positioned to grow being under Noodle's guidance."

Cohen, who started the company while an undergraduate, says he's going to take some time before deciding what his next venture will be. "I'm fascinated by all the things to do in education and entrepreneurship," he said. But I want to sit back and explore a bit before jumping in."

Last year, Lore raised $6 million from a variety of investors including The Social+Capital Partnership, IA Ventures, Founder's Fund (including Peter Thiel), Shasta Ventures, Founder Collective and other angels

Katzman, who also founded The Princeton Review and 2U (originally 2tor), is devoting significant time and resources to Noodle, an online recommendation engine for lifelong learning.
