WriteReader is a book-creating web and iPad tool for elementary school students. It allows students to develop their reading skills by writing and self-correcting their own digital stories. It is free.
APPROACH
Teachers begin using WriteReader by creating an account, logging in, and entering in student information to create an online class. They are given a class code which they then distribute to students to log in.
After logging in, students create books by taking a picture for their book cover, along with entering the title and their name. They then insert photos and write descriptions on the following pages to create a story. If the text written is incorrect, teachers can write the correct sentence underneath the student's’ text. Students then correct the sentence and can add text frames and speech bubbles to their pictures and voice record the story. Once they have completed their story, students share their books to the class’ online library for viewing.
WHO’S USING IT
As of 2016, over 100,000 students are using WriteReader.
