Support adults building vocab skillls

Overview

Goals: The Words2Learn mobile learning program includes an app and learning management system that aims to support vocabulary development for adult learners preparing for postsecondary education programs.

Approach: Words2Learn was designed to be used in a flipped classroom environment. The mobile learning program has a blended, three-pronged approach including the app, the learning management system, and the element of in-classroom instruction. Both versions of the app (Academic and Health) follow the same approach. A student is presented with a set of five words per session, which typically takes 15-30 minutes to complete. Independently, the student takes a pre-test, and is exposed to the pronunciation, definition, and the word used in context. Then, the student is asked a series of objective questions, giving them an opportunity to apply their knowledge. When the student attends class, the teacher often uses the objective questions to launch discussion. Typically, after some form of in-class instruction utilizing the vocabulary, the student takes a second test before moving onto the next word list.

Implementation: A pilot took place in fall 2013 with five teachers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. As of summer 2014, World Education is fundraising for Words2Learn so they can expand the mobile learning program.

Pricing: A free app is available for mobile Android and iOS devices.

Who is Using It: Funded by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, Words2Learn was piloted in fall 2013 by five teachers from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The program is appropriate for a range of adult learners including English Language Learners, students in transitional or bridge programs, and students training for a career in healthcare.

Product Brief

Goals

Words2Learn supports vocabulary development and is designed for adults preparing for postsecondary education programs. There are two versions of the app: Words2Learn Academic and Words2Learn Health. Words2Learn Health focuses on vocabulary specific to the healthcare industry and was designed to prepare students looking for a career in healthcare.

Approach

The Flipped Learning Model

Words2Learn was designed to be used in a flipped classroom environment so that students can preview and get exposure to vocabulary prior to class. The mobile learning program has a blended, three-pronged approach including the app, the learning management system, and the element of in-classroom instruction.

Typically, a student accesses a wordlist and completes a set of activities prior to class on their own time. The teacher can login to the learning management system to see student progress and can plan to use a portion of class time to provide additional support when necessary.

The App

Both versions of the Words2Learn app (Academic and Health) follow the same approach. A student is presented with a set of five words per session, which typically takes 15-30 minutes to complete. The student takes a pre-test, and is exposed to the pronunciation, definition, and the word used in context.

Words2Learn is available on a web browser, a mobile browser, as an iOS app for iPad and iPhone, and as an Android app for smartphones and tablets. The content can also be downloaded to a phone or tablet and used offline. If a student uses Words2Learn offline, their progress will be saved and uploaded as soon as the student resumes online work.

The Learning Management System (LMS)

The LMS allows teachers to see progress at the class level and at the level of the individual student, including user login activity and content completion. This enables teachers to preview which students are struggling with vocabulary prior to class so that they can provide in-person support during class.

During the pilot, the five teachers used pre-loaded word lists. However, using the LMS, a teacher can modify or add his/her own wordlist with minimal training.

Who is Using It

The Words2Learn mobile learning program was piloted in fall 2013 with five teachers from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The pilot’s student population consisted of 54 adult learners including a group of students preparing for the GED from Boston Center for Youth and Families, a group of ELL students studying to become pharmacists at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a group of students from a pre-college program at North Shore Community College called Bridge to College & Careers in Health Care who were working towards becoming certified nursing assistants.

For the pilot, students were asked to learn the words from the list on their app prior to class. Teachers were responsible for engaging with guided practice and expanding students’ exposure to the words, and asking learners to apply vocabulary during class activities.

As of summer 2014, World Education is fundraising for Words2Learn so that the mobile learning program can expand. The program is appropriate for a range of adult learners including English Language Learners, students in transitional or bridge programs and students training for a career in healthcare.
