Vocabulary.com is an online vocabulary aquisition game for teachers and students. Students answer vocabulary definition questions, advancing through more challenging words the more they get correct. Teachers can assign students vocabulary words and monitor their performance. Vocabulary.com is free for students.
APPROACH
All users begin using Vocabular.com by going to the website and creating an acount. Once logged in, students begin answering vocabulary questions from their home dashboard. The multiple choice-style questions feature a challenging vocabulary from a notable passage of literature. Students select the correct answer and advance to the next question. A record of points accumulated, correct answers, leaderboards, and friends appears next to the question for student view. For correct answers, students accumulate virtual points and positions on the leaderboard. Vocabulary.com increases the difficulty of the vocabulary words as students advance through the questions correctly.
Students can enter in their own vocabulary words to practice for an exam, or browse Vocabulary.com’s library of vocabulary words by topic or famous passage. For example, students can select ‘United States Bill of Rights’ to study and practice the vocabulary words they will see when reading the Bill of Rights.
Teachers being using Vocabulary.com by logging in and following prompts to enter in all student information to create a class. From the class dashboard, they select which vocabulary list they wish to assign students from the Vocabulary.com list library. Once students have completed the practice quizzes, teachers can view and assess student performance from graphic reports on their class dashboard.
For correct answers, students accumulate virtual points and positions on the leaderboard.
