Video coding tool aimed to interest girls in coding

Overview

VidCode is a tool designed to excite students, especially young women, about coding. Users upload their own videos, and use pre-made effects to alter the video while learning about the code that makes the changes happen. VidCode is free to use.

APPROACH

Students log in to VidCode with their Facebook or Instagram accounts, and can upload videos to their accounts. The user’s screen is split between the video on one side, and the code for the video on the other.

Students drag and drop pre-made effects into the code. Text alongside the code explains the purpose of each line, and encourages students to play around with the variables. Variables in the code (e.g. the amount of blur in a blur effect, etc.) are highlighted in colors so they stand out for the student.

Finally, students can save videos to the site and export them for others to see.

IMPLEMENTATION

VidCode is a browser-based tool.

PRICING

VidCode is free to use.

WHO IS USING IT

According to the company's website , VidCode has taught thousands of teenagers in 120 countries across the world JavaScript.
