by Three Ring
Three Ring is a tablet and mobile app that allows teachers and students to snap a photo of written work, capture video of presentations, or record audio of student discussions -- all for the sake of supporting classroom organization. Users can download the Android or iOS App and collect qualitative student work, which they can access at school or at home at any time. The artifacts can then be organized into portfolios and/or filtered into IEPs (individualized education programs) for special education students.
Three Ring divides up into functions into four categories: Capture, Organize, Share, and Assess. Firstly, teachers or students can take a picture, record a video, or upload work from any mobile device or computer. Secondly, teachers or students can classify work, tag assignments (by Common Core Standard, unit, assignment type, etc.), and find work by using Three Ring’s search engine. For teachers, this organization takes place in the form of student portfolios. Thirdly, teachers, parents, and students can all log onto their respective accounts to view assignments and leave comments for other another’s viewing. Permissions are established so as to keep certain items secure and private, depending on the audience. Fourthly, teachers can share exemplars of high-quality work with parents and students. They can also provide feedback via the “comments” option.
Three Ring is free for any teacher, student, or parent to use. The app can be downloaded free from the App store.
Three Ring was co-founded by Michael Lindsay, Alec Turnbull, and Steve Silvius in November of 2011. The founders endeavored to support teachers and students in collecting and using all forms of assessment as evidence of learning. The first version of Three Ring was launched in March 2012, and has since been written up in publications like Fast Company and Mashable.
Three is available through any web browser, as well as through their native iOS and Android smartphone and tablet apps.
Districts and schools can purchase Three Ring for $199 per teacher per year. This price includes licenses for all students, administrators, and parents, as well unlimited storage and access. Three Ring does discount based on the size of the school/district and length of the commitment. The Three Ring apps are also available for teachers and parents to download for free.
WHO IS USING IT:
As of January 12, 2015 Three Ring has been used by over 100,000 teachers and students in over 1,000 schools.
