Multi-platform BYOD student dialogue system that focuses on real-time assessments.

Overview

The Answer Pad (TAP) is a multi-platform BYOD (bring your own device) student dialogue system that focuses on real-time assessments. Teachers can register for free, create their class, and sign up their students. They have the option of entering their students' info, importing a roster, or having the students self-register with a registration code. Students can download the TAPit app for free onto their iPads or access the app on a computer through a web browser.

TAP’s “Go Interactive” offers a variety of different functions related to assessing student understanding with quick assessment. First, teachers can see if all of their students are online through the teacher dashboard, and they can send out questions of all types to their students, including a blank pad or graph that allows teachers to see how their students are working through the problems. Teachers receive a full image of each student’s work, and they can share and project it for the rest of the class to see. Second, teachers can poll students using multiple choice to gauge their class’s understanding in real-time in a bar graph format.

In addition to the real-time interactive component of TAP, teachers also can develop assessments based on what they have taught by creating electronic answer sheets (which can be designed with eight different question types and an optional scratch pad). Teachers don’t have to import graphics, but can instead utilize the paper tests and quizzes they have already found or created for that. TAP collects all of the student answers and immediately reports their results to the teacher. Teachers can digest each student’s progress and areas of need, as well as view a snapshot of their whole class.

The Answer Pad is free for up to 200 students over 8 classrooms. Teachers also can upgrade to Answer Pad+ for $1 per student per year or $10 per teacher per year. Upgrading to TAP+ lets teachers take advantage of premium features, including the template gallery. This grants teachers access to hundreds of backgrounds and images that give them lots of creative control and freedom in how they represent questions to their students. Teachers can also upload custom designs and public images if they can’t find for what they are looking. Schools and districts need to contact the company directly about purchasing Answer Pad School/District.

The Answer Pad was founded in November of 2012 and is located in Stamford, Connecticut. The TAP team seeks to go further than traditional student response systems through “Go Interactive”. The original TAP was released in November of 2012, and the iPad app, TAPit Free, was released in October of the same year. They have accumulated at least 10,000 student and 1,000 teacher users as of October 2013.
