TalkingPoints is a messenger tool for educators. It allows teachers and administrators to connect and communicate with parents via text messaging directly to their phones and in their native languages. TalkingPoints is free for teachers, though schools pay for premium features. The product will be widely available for the first time during the 2016-'17 school year.
All users begin using TalkingPoints by following prompts to create an account and login. Once logged in, teachers and administrators enter in all relative student and parent contact information such as name, email address, phone number, home language and relationship to student in the ‘Contacts’ dashboard. They then group contacts by contact type such as ‘Family’ or ‘Students’ and by specific group names such as ‘7th Grade’ or ‘8th Grade Math.’ From the ‘Send Message’ dashboard, educators send parents a message by selecting which contact type, group, or individual student or parent they wish to send a message to. They type in the message, use a drop down menu to select which message type it is, such as ‘Open Ended,’ and send it out to the specified contacts. They have the option to schedule a response for a later time, or enter in an automated response. TalkingPoints will translate the message to the desired language of the parents.
Parents receive messages on their cell phones in both English and the selected home language. They respond just as they would for a normal text message. This response can be in the parent's home language, which the tool will translate into English for the teacher. TalkingPoints calculates their response rate into a percentage and reports the metric back to the teacher or administrators ‘Analytics’ dashboard.
WHO’S USING IT
As of October 2015, over 1,000 teachers in 50 schools are using TalkingPoints.
TalkingPoints is free for teachers.
