Product Brief

Goals

Skillshare is an online platform that provides project-based classes. The company’s main goal is to provide universal access to high-quality learning. Skillshare aims to create a hub for content within the creative community, and to provide individuals with opportunities to learn, to teach, to build their brand, and in some cases to benefit financially.

Approach

Skillshare’s approach is “learning by doing.” Each class on Skillshare’s platform is taught by an expert with experience in the field and includes a short video lessons, written text and a hands-on project. The hands-on project offers learners the opportunity to put the skills they have learned into practice. Learners can share their projects on the Skillshare platform. Users can browse the projects, offer feedback, and write reviews for classes they’ve taken. Skillshare’s platform ensures that the most engaging content rises to the top based on enrollment and reviews.

The Learner

Upon signing up, learners will get access to all classes on the platform. A learner can browse popular classes and new releases. Learners can also browse classes in a specific “school” (such as design, entrepreneurship or fashion) or “subject” (such as animation, lettering or marketing.) While browsing, a learner can click on a particular class to view information like student projects, a class description, reviews, and background information on the teacher. Learners can enroll in the class or save it for later.

Skillshare has a freemium business model, so users can sign up for free and access all content, however free access is limited to one hour per month. There are also a few limitations in terms of functionality such as ability to download videos for mobile use. The paid version of Skillshare ($9.95 per month) grants unlimited access, is ad-free, allows users to download video through the mobile app and allows users to make their videos high-definition and full screen.

The Teacher

Anyone can create and teach a class on Skillshare as long as the class follows the guidelines, which include the class flow (video, text, project) and video quality standards. Teachers must choose a method for recording video and Skillshare recommends software options for screen recording (such as Quickcast, Quicktime, CamStudio and Camtasia), and editing (such as iMovie and Windows Movie Maker).

Skillshare provides tips and recommendations for individuals looking to teach classes on the platform. The company suggests that classes run between 15-45 minutes long, and that each video segment is eight minutes or below.

Implementation

Most of Skillshare’s users are independent learners. However, the company recently began piloting a few implementation options for businesses that want to make Skillshare classes available for their employees.

Business Model and Pricing

Skillshare has a freemium business model. Users can sign up for free to gain access to all Skillshare classes. The free version allows members to watch one hour of video lessons monthly (with ads), and includes full access to all classes. The paid version of Skillshare ($9.95 per month) allows users to watch unlimited video lessons each month and is ad-free. With the paid membership, users can also download videos through the mobile app and videos in high-definition and full screen.

Revenue comes from Premium Memberships and advertising. Skillshare teachers with two or more classes and with 300 or more students can apply to become partner teachers. Partner teachers earn a percentage of Skillshare’s monthly revenue. Skillshare uses an algorithm (including videos viewed, students enrolled, etc.) to decide each Partner’s share.

Recently, Skillshare began piloting a few implementation options for businesses that want to make Skillshare classes available for their employees. There are three options for businesses: Team, Business and Enterprise. The Team option is a good fit for businesses looking to get a small group of employees using Skillshare. The Business option is more structured, providing clients with a plan for implementation, recommended courses and user analytics. The Enterprise option is most appropriate for larger companies looking for custom solutions.
