MyLivePD provides K-12 math teachers with live on-demand coaching and professional development on curriculum content, mastering effective teaching techniques, and reviewing lesson plans. The service was launched by Tutor.com, the world's largest online tutoring service in 2011. The product also found initial funding in a $1.8 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2011 to provide tutoring services to teachers. A pilot program successfully provided more than 200 middle and high school algebra teachers in Maryland, California, Arizona and four other regions with free coaching lessons through 2012. The service has since expanded to teachers nationwide.
MyLife PD enables teachers access to a coach through personalized online chat sessions. Sessions can be focused on any instructional issue, such as math teaching strategies, classroom management, lesson planning, Common Core integration, and finding other teaching resources. To get started, teachers create personalized accounts and answer an extensive background survey on their teaching experience and classroom setting. Following the creation of an account, teachers log on and get matched to a coach and can communicate through chat messaging, audio chat, or a virtual whiteboard platform.
Coaches are carefully selected for their extensive knowledge of math content and previous pedagogic experience. They are available Sunday through Thursday from 2 PM ET to midnight. No appointments are required.
Teachers can purchase the service by selecting from a variety of plans. Individual plans start at $100 an hour. Discount pricing is also available for schools and districts interested in buying MyLivePD for multiple teachers. As of April 2014, MyLivePD does not offer any official credit or certification programs as part of its services.
