SUMMARY
Monster Math is a game made for K-5 students to practice Common Core aligned math skills. On either iPhones or iPads, students complete math problems in order to progress through the game’s storyline. Although all students follow the same storyline throughout the game, the game allows players to customize which skills they would like to focus on. Monster Math offers both a free and paid version of its app.
GOALS
Monster Math is a customizable math game for elementary and middle school students. With a creative storyline, Monster Math aims to provide students with a fun way to learn and practice selected Common Core math skills, like how to multiply single digit numbers by multiples of 10.
APPROACH
After downloading Monster Math on either an iPhone or iPad, students are prompted to name their “monster.” Afterward, a brief animation explains the game’s objective: to rescue their monster’s best friend, a fellow monster named Dextra. To do this, they must complete a journey riddled with obstacles in the form of math problems. The journey is divided into multiple levels, each of which focuses on a specific math skill. For example, one level requires players to select candies with subtraction problems (contained within the candy) equal to a certain number. With the paid version of the game, students can also compete against each other through a multiplayer setting.
Monster math places a notable emphasis on student tailored paths through the game, giving players (or teachers) the ability to determine which skills they would like to focus on at any point through an easily accessible settings window. A soon to be released version of the game will also allow students to choose a particular grade of math based on Common Core standards.
For teachers, Monster Math reports on students’ progress as well as mastery of specific skills.
IMPLEMENTATION
Monster Math is available for download as an app for iOS devices.
PRICING
Monster Math’s full app can be purchased for $2.99. A free version, which comes with limited features, is also available for download.
WHO IS USING IT
Monster Math is used by over 25,000 students across the country.
