Mathseeds is a learning tool designed to provide an introductory exposure to mathematics for students between the ages of 3 and 7. Mathseeds uses interactive animations, lesson activities, and, for younger students, an ebook in an adventure-style interface to guide learning. Users must pay to use Mathseeds.
Each of the online Mathseeds programs include 50 lessons adapted to the grade level of the student. After a student logs on, he or she will be in the “playroom,” a dashboard containing various options including lessons and awards. Each lesson begins with an animation involving five main characters. The purpose of the animations is to provide an interactive method to introduce a new math concept. After watching the animation, students can complete activities in nine different categories, ranging from counting and shape recognition, to early multiplication and division. After completing the activities, students can read or listen to a narration of the Mathseeds ebook, which contain the concepts in each lesson. After every 5 lessons, students take a multiple-choice test. If they pass, they will receive a printable certificate. Lessons can also be repeated, and parents have a parent dashboard that tracks student progress. As students complete lessons, they are rewarded with “e-pets” and golden acorns, which can be used to purchase items for their avatar or treehouse.
Mathseeds is also available as a mobile application, which includes features that are different from the online version. These applications each contain 81 question sets in 9 topics, timed activities, multiplayer games, and a reward system similar to the online version. The application also tracks student progress. Each application offers a free trial.
Finally, Mathseeds offers a school edition. This edition offers extra features in addition to those in the online version. These include automatic scoring and progress reporting, lesson plans to fuse Mathseeds into school curriculum, and a Teacher Toolkit, which includes digital books and worksheets. The Mathseeds school edition is aligned to Common Core Standards.
