Common-core aligned math games for K-8

Overview

Math Games provides students with math curriculum in an animated, video game format. Students answer math questions correctly to advance through fictional worlds, while teachers monitor and track student progress and skill mastery. Math Games is free for all users.

APPROACH

Teachers start using Math Games by signing up and creating a username and password. They then import their class list and student information from Edmodo, Google, or Excel.

Students start using Math Games by creating a student account. They then select which game they want to play-- King of Math, Math Smash Animal Rescue, Math Buzz, Math Leaper, or Math Missile. Student progress reports on skills mastered, times attempted, percent correct, and time spent on questions in the games are sent back to their teacher’s dashboard for assessment.

Students select which game they wish to play from their homepage. Once they choose the game, they then select their grade level and skill they have been assigned to work on. Students then begin playing the math video games. In King of Math, students answer math questions correctly to advance levels and protect their fictional fort from zombie invaders to become the Math King. For Math Smash: Animal Rescue, students read questions and select the block with the correct answer. Correct answers connect blocks and make them disappear, allowing students to collect coins, unlock special powers, and advance levels through 5 different ‘worlds.’ In Math Buzz, students protect the queen bee and rescue captured bees by similarly selecting blocks with correct answers after reading the question. For correct answers, bees are freed to help protect the queen bee and advance levels. In Math Leaper, students answer questions correctly to jump higher, avoid slime, and advance levels, and in Math Missiles, students answer questions correctly to launch missiles at alien invaders and progress through the game.
