Math games and quizzes for grades K -10 with integrated analytics and inter-school competitions


Mangahigh offers over 600 web-based games and adaptive quizzes aligned to math curriculum for grades K through 10. Teachers can access some of this content for free, but they can also upgrade to Mangahigh Plus to access 100% of the content along with additional data analytics and personalization features. As of August 2015, over 50,000 students and teachers and over 5,000 school leaders have used Mangahigh in over 1,000 schools around the world.


Teachers can search for quizzes and games that align to particular Common Core State Standards and assign them to individual students or the entire class to complete both in the classroom and at home. Teachers can track student progress and activity on their assignments via a Newsfeed. As students progress through the assigned activities, they are guided by a virtual tutor that intervenes when a student struggles and fills in the concept or skill gap. Students can also earn medals and compete with students from other schools for the top spot on the leaderboard for a particular game or activity.


Mangahigh activities and games are all browser-based, so they can be accessed on any device with an internet connection.


Teachers can access many of Mangahigh’s activities and games for free. They can also upgrade to Mangahigh Plus for an annual license of around $5 per student. This plan includes full access to 100% of their content, analytics and personalized learning pathways for students. There are volume based discounts, so an annual license for 500 students would end up costing $2000 or $4 per student.


As of August 2015, over 50,000 students and teachers and over 5,000 school leaders have used Mangahigh in over 1,000 schools around the world.

Product Brief

How does it work?

To get started with Mangahigh, teachers or administrators register their school. They select which international standards their schools follow. They then can create a “class” in the system either by uploading a student/class roster spreadsheet or through Mangahigh’s automated log-in generator. The program generates a unique URL for each school and a unique log-in and password for each student.

A teacher dashboard lets the instructor browse for math content by grade or standard. For each grade there is a list of learning objectives as defined by standard selected at the time of registration. Selecting any part of this list will bring up a list of games that cover the learning objectives. Teachers can play through the games themselves before assigning them to students.

The teacher chooses games for individual students or for the entire class and sets a target completion date and target goal. Goals are measured in medals (bronze, silver, gold) that relate to how many points a student has earned in the game, which loosely reflect basic topic comprehension, topic mastery, and topic total mastery. (For example, a gold medal is awarded when a student has correctly answered 10 consecutive “extremely difficult” questions).

Students then use the school URL and log in to see all the assigned challenges. The site features casual games, which are fairly simple to pick up. Every game provide directions or even a tutorial on how to play. What makes them “adaptive”: The difficulty of the math problems adjusts during the course of the game, according to student performance.

The teacher dashboard tracks how each student performed at the assigned challenge. It also lets teachers compare their students’ performance against other classes in the world that have worked on the same challenge.

How it's used

Mangahigh is generally used a supplemental program to practice math skills taught in class. The program is “assignable,” or flexible in that it does not prescribe a curriculum path but lets teachers select appropriate games and challenges for their students. Once teachers have picked the challenges, students can use Mangahigh independently at home or school with minimum oversight. CEO Toby Rowland says the program is strongest in middle schools, but students in grades 3 through 10 are using it extensively.

What material is presented?

Mangahigh currently has 16 different games and four “traditional” exercise programs that resemble multiple-choice answer worksheets. There are a total of 60,000 different math problems, all of which are aligned to various international standards. Upon registration, the administrator selects the relevant standard based on his or her region.

Mangahigh offers content that is aligned with Common Core Standards, as well as state standards for Florida, New York and Texas. It is also aligned with standards for Ontario, Canada, the U.K. National Curriculum and portions of Australia. The program is only available in English.

The math problems presented in the games range from addition to quadratic factorization and cover 80% of the objectives set by the standards. The curriculum covers Common Core objectives for grades 3 through 10. Teachers browse through a list of standardized learning objectives to find relevant games and play them before assigning them to students.


Mangahigh CEO Toby Rowland believes that the head-to-head challenges are an effective way to get students engaged in the games. Visible on both the teacher and student dashboards is a list of the results from these challenges (called “Fai-To’s”) between different schools, as well as a leader board showing which school has been the most active and “victorious” in the the country. Since February 2012, there have been just under 2,400 Fai-To’s across the world.

Students are awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals for their performance in the games. They can also check the class leader board to see the top five performers in the class and high achievers in each country.

How it assesses students

Mangahigh tracks student performance on the challenges assigned by the teacher. The reporting system allows the teacher to view this from a class perspective and plots students’ scores on a graph. The teacher can drill down to see reports on an individual level, which shows each student’s high score, time played, accuracy, and awards for each challenge. Teachers can compare individual and class performance to national and global averages.

The system will flag students who haven't put in much effort and put them in the “Sin Bin,” which is visible on the teacher dashboard.

All reports can be exported as a .csv or .xls files.

How much does it cost?

As of mid 2013 Mangahigh was a freemium subscription service: Users can register to get access to a free account. Fuller function versions run approximately $150 per year for five users, with discounts available for larger groups. See the pricing information here. 

How does the company train and support teachers?

Mangahigh regularly conducts free webinars for teachers, which cover mostly introductory issues (adding/modifying student accounts, accessing reports, demonstration of games and challenges).

Buts, Ands, Ors

As of February 2012, Mangahigh was planning to roll out a new business model that would continue to offer the program free to teachers and schools but have a fee-based adaptive learning package aimed at tutoring and homeschooling environments and so sold to parents. 


Mangahigh offers upbeat commentary from students and teachers on its website. Most of these reviews focus on students' and teachers' attitudes toward the program; some compare scores before and after using Mangahigh. Descriptions of school programs come primarily from the U.K. and Australia.

One of the largest Mangahigh reports involved 1,000 students at 10 secondary schools in Scotland using Mangahigh during a three-month period in 2010. An assessment was done by Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS), a national body responsible for reviewing curriculum and guiding Scotland’s education system. In a sampling of 260 students from six of the schools in the study, LTS found an improvement of 13 percent in test scores.

Technical requirements

Mangahigh works on all Pentium processors that can run modern browsers and have the latest version of Flash installed. It also works on most Android tablets. Some of Mangahigh’s games can be played on iPads using iSwifter.
