Automated online math tutoring and analytics tool for K-12 students

Overview

LearnBop is an automated tutoring and assessment tool for K-12 students that is aligned to the Common Core Math State Standards.

Teachers can assign a set of problems to their class, presented as either a multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank type question. Each student completes the set of problems individually. When a student makes a mistake, LearnBop will present a step-by-step breakdown of the solution, reviewing the core principles learned in previous grades that are essential to understanding how to complete the problem. Every answer, including those given during the step-by-step tutoring component, is recorded and presented to the teacher in a learning dashboard. Each problem in an assignment is correlated to a specific Common Core Standard, so it is easy to see with which concepts students are struggling.

Teachers can view this data for their whole class, as well as individual breakdowns for each student. This allows teachers to prepare targeted lessons around the most difficult concepts and the most forgotten fundamentals. LearnBop has partnered with LearnZillion, which allows them to also deliver video lessons directly to those students that are not able to solve a problem using the step-by-step hints.

LearnBop was founded in May of 2010 by Bharanidharan Rajakumar and Arthur Tu, who, inspired by the Open Learning Initiative during their time at Carnegie Mellon University, are committed to breaking down math knowledge into small enough pieces that every child can learn. The product was first released in June of 2012 and updated in July of 2013. The design of the platform was inspired by the intelligent tutoring and learning sciences research conducted at Carnegie Mellon’s HCI Institute and at the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center. According to the research, students can increase performance by up to 2 standard deviations when they have their own tutor. Not everyone can afford their own tutor, so LearnBop hopes to bring the benefits to everyone.

LearnBop was accepted into an incubator in New York City run by DreamIT Ventures and Startl. The team also includes several Presidential Award Winners of Mathematics (who are in charge of developing the content) and a former Board Member of the National Council of Teachers for Mathematics (who serves as the director).

The company has won several awards, including 1st place at the Yale School of Management Education Business Plan Competition in 2011.
