Knewton Math Readiness bolsters students’ basic math skills and prepares them for success with college math. The program uses Knewton’s adaptive learning platform to determine students’ areas of weakness and target personalized study material recommendations accordingly. The program can be accessed on any device, including tablets and smartphones.
Offerings are aligned with the Common Core State Standards across seven core subjects (including geometry, statistics, and algebra). Students begin with an introduction video and warm-up quiz, move on to a series of video teaching sessions and practice quizzes, and finally take a ten-question test to demonstrate mastery and move onto the next level. Along the way, students can earn points and merit badges for their accomplishments--and receive feedback on areas where they struggle. In addition to using student progress data to tailor instruction, teachers and administrators can also create online study groups to connect students who are working on similar concepts.
This course was developed in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), and publisher Pearson provided the content for some of Knewton’s credit-bearing freshman math classes there. Knewton began rolling out Knewton Math Readiness at ASU in spring 2011 and updated its offerings there in fall 2012 with a blended learning course in which professors’ teaching is complemented by (and informed by) students’ use of the Knewton platform. As of September 2012, over a dozen large colleges and universities (including UNLV and University of Alabama) had signed on as well.
A case study on Knewton's website of over 2,000 development math students at ASU reported that "withdrawal rates dropped by 56% and pass rates went from 64% to 75%" over the course of two semesters.
In 2012, Knewton completed an API integration with Pearson MyLab, so that student performance on content provided by Pearson can now be tracked and analyzed by Knewton's engine to create recommendations and individualized learning pathways.
