Product Brief

Goals

Fast Forward is KET’s online GED preparation program, allowing adult learners to prepare for the GED test at home or on the go. The program is aligned to the 2014 GED test. The goal of Fast Forward is to support adult learners in passing the GED test so that they can apply to a post-secondary education program or gain employment.

Fast Forward is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and can also be used to prepare for other high school equivalency exams including the TASC and HiSET exams.

Approach

Fast Forward is an online program that supports adult learners in preparing to take the GED test. The Fast Forward program can be used for distance learning or in a classroom. It is mobile-friendly so adult learners can use their smart phones and tablets to access the course on the go. Fast Forward provides courses in math, language arts, social studies and science. It also has a Course Management System that tracks student activity and allows classroom teachers using the program to access reports on student progress. There is also a gradebook for teachers and a “toolkit” that offers ideas and resources for how to use the program in a classroom setting.

Each Fast Forward course (math, language arts, social studies and science) is divided into sections that cover various topics and skills. Each section begins with a pre-test containing 25 questions. Fast Forward will recommend a sequence of lessons for the section based on the strengths and weaknesses a student demonstrates during the pre-test. However, a student can always choose to review all of the content, not just the recommended content.

Course content includes explanations of why the questions are important for the test, examples, video clips of demonstrations and real-life connections to the questions, virtual manipulatives and a glossary so students can access definitions as they learn.

There are multiple opportunities for students to check their understanding as they move throughout the content. There are check-in questions after each lesson, a 10 question review at the end of each skill, and a 12 question review at the end of each topic.

KET also offers a Pre-GED preparation program called Pre-GED Connection for adult learners who need extra support in literacy. The program has 5 workbooks for writing, reading, math, social studies and science. These can be used prior to using the Fast Forward program.

Implementation

The Fast Forward program can be used for distance learning or in a classroom setting. There is a Course Management System that provides teachers with insight into students progress, as well as a gradebook. It is also commonly used by prison systems to prepare inmates for the GED test.
