Fosters literacy through personalized reading and learning

Overview

iLIT is a CCSS-aligned, personalized literacy tool for tablets that promotes reading and writing skills. iLIT is a full language arts curriculum that is broken into six distinct pieces. The tool is available on nearly all tablets and must be purchased.

APPROACH

The iLIT program is comprised of 6 components:

  1. Time to Read: students choose a book to read from the 1600+ titles available on iLIT. The wide variety of books available on iLIT allows each student to find something she is interested in reading.
  2. Vocabulary: the teacher introduces new vocabulary for the day. While reading, students can also tap any word in any text to see a definition. There is also audio and picture support for definitions, and every word can be translated into 45 languages.
  3. Read Aloud/Think Aloud: the teacher brings the class back to one grade level text for the whole room to teach grade level standards and reads aloud from a portion of the text. The teacher provides instructional scaffolding that students need to access grade level texts, asking them questions about the text.
  4. Classroom Conversation: The teacher then asks questions to foster conversations between small groups of students.
  5. Whole Group: the teacher then provides direct instruction to the class around writing techniques.
  6. Work Time: students complete personalized activities at their current level in the program, while the teacher provides small group instruction with any students who need extra help.

While completing both reading and writing activities, students receive real time feedback on their answers from the program. Throughout all steps of the process, students can take notes in a student notebook on their device.

Data from student activities is sent to the teacher’s account where he can track student progress on a number of different dimensions. This data can then be used to group students into small groups for practice on targeted skills. When using the tool, teachers can also take and save notes on individual students.

IMPLEMENTATION

iLIT can be used on a browser or on Windows 8, Android, or iOS devices. The program is designed to be used in 1:1 classrooms. Teachers will also need their own tablet to control the program. A projector or TV screen is necessary to model reading techniques..
