Activities and games that teachers use during breaks to promote focus through physical activity

Overview

SUMMARY

GoNoodle is an online resource that provides teachers with a library of “brain break” videos to use in their classrooms. The videos - ranging in length from two to ten minutes - are geared toward students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and they cover a variety of activities, such as exercise, song, dance, mindfulness, and coordination. Access to GoNoodle’s primary library of videos is completely free, however, teachers can pay $99 per year (or $10 per month) to upgrade to GoNoodle Plus, which includes a library of videos that are aligned to Common Core Math and ELA standards.

APPROACH

Upon registering for a free account on GoNoodle, teachers can log in and create pages for each of their classes. Teachers select a “champ” avatar who represents the class and who changes appearance as students watch more GoNoodle videos. Teachers are then taken to their Dashboard where they can browse all of the videos by category and channel or view a selection of featured videos. Teachers can open, play, and save videos whenever and as often as they’d like. Teachers even have the option to print out a PDF inviting parents to use GoNoodle at home.

As of February 2016, GoNoodle’s category offering includes Guided Dancing, Free Movement, Stretching, Sports and Exercise, Kinesthetic Learning, Coordination, and Calming. Channels, on the other hand, follow a common theme, but may include videos from multiple different categories. Some of these channels offerings include Zumba Kids, Game On!, KidzBop, and Indoor Recess. The latter channel, Indoor Recess, provides longer videos (roughly twenty minutes each) that string together a variety of shorter videos.

The content of GoNoodle’s videos varies immensely, but all of their clips are intended to help students refocus and stimulate their learning. Students might dance and sing along to a silly video one day, then be guided through a stretching exercise the next day. Conversely, student may watch a short video in the morning that motivates them to do the right thing, and then participate in on-screen track-and-field events later that afternoon.

PRICING

There is no charge to create an account and gain access to GoNoodle’s primary library of brain break videos. However, GoNoodle also offers a premium account, GoNoodle Plus, that gives teachers access to an additional library of videos that are aligned to Common Core Math and ELA standards. GoNoodle Plus provides customizable content, including word lists and sets of practice questions specific to the GoNoodle Plus activities. The cost to upgrade to a GoNoodle Plus subscription is $10 per month or $99 per year, and it comes with a 30-day free trial for first-time users.

I would love to see a middle school and high school version. This could definately still be used in high school however, it would need to be done in a more limited fashion as some of the students may balk at the animation that has been choosen. Different graphisc for different school levels. We h...
