Released in 2013, Goalbook’s Toolkit supports special education teachers in writing and teaching Common Core-based I.E.P. goals. This professional learning tool includes hundreds of learning goals directly aligned to Common Core, Univeral Design for Learning (UDL) strategies, and instructional resources. Teachers can browse by standard or by area of need to identify a measurable, standards-based goal that is appropriate for any student.
Goalbook’s Toolkit is more than a traditional I.E.P. goal bank. On each goal detail page, the Common Core Standard is addressed and directly linked to the learning outcomes.
For example, one Reading Informational Text Grade 2 standard is:
“Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.”
While this is standard is flexible and allows teachers to experiment with different approaches, they can be left wondering what the lesson plan should look like. Goalbook’s Toolkit translates this into teacher-friendly, specific, and measurable goals. For this example, the grade-level goal for this standard is:
“By (date), after reading two, second grade, informational texts, (name) will write a short piece that compares and contrasts the texts using the (3) most important points in each text in (4 out of 5) trials as measured by a (student work samples).”
After determining the “core purpose” of the Common Core Standard, expert educators can write four learning goals for students at different learning levels:
students achieving at grade level
students in need of mild support
students in need of moderate support (several years below grade level)
students with significant learning challenges.
Many students with I.E.P. goals do not currently have grade-level skills, thus Goalbook’s Toolkit offers the modified goals to fit all students’ needs. Based on the student’s needs, the teacher may select which goal is most appropriate.
Inspiration for great lesson plans is also integrated into each goal page. Expert educators have written detailed information on UDL adaptation strategies, attached instructional resources, and provided links to related goals. Goalbook’s Toolkit customizes each goal page to make Common Core aligned I.E.P. goals and instruction as effortless as possible. For ease and convenience, Toolkit runs on iOS and most web browsers.
Teachers can sign up for a free trial, and then register for Goalbook’s Toolkit for $19.95 a month. School districts and other educational institutions can also purchase Toolkit at a discounted rate.
Currently, teachers in Washington D.C. Public Schools and various charter schools use Goalbook’s Toolkit to write and instruct Common Core-aligned I.E.P. goals.
