Common Core aligned, teacher designed adaptive math app and teacher dashboard for K-8

Project Unicorn Vendor Signatory

Front Row offers adaptive, interactive math and ELA practice for K-8 students that is Common Core aligned and tied into a teacher progress monitoring system. The product also provides a library of multi-day inquiry-based math activities, complete with daily presentations and printable worksheets. A free subscription to Front Row includes the adaptive math practice program, as well as limited access to its inquiry-based lessons and ELA articles, while the paid School Edition unlocks full access to all resources and additional school-level data reporting.

Front Row’s content covers K-8 math and ELA Common Core standards. Its math offering includes individual online practice for students, as well as group lessons that are meant to be taught at the whole-class level over multiple days. The online math practice allows teachers to assign specific activities for individual students to complete when they log on to their student accounts.

Teachers can assign Adaptive Practices, Targeted Practice Assignments, and Benchmark Assessments. Adaptive Practices use diagnostic data collected on each student to create a personalized set of items based on individual student needs. Targeted Practice Assignments focus specifically on a teacher-designated Common Core standard and are not individualized for each student. Benchmark Assessments give teachers the opportunity to assess the whole class on a specific standard, domain, or grade-level. All of these assignments pull from Front Row’s library of over 30,000 Common Core aligned items in various formats, such as multiple choice, short answer, and sorting tasks.

When students log into their individual accounts, they can view all activities that have been assigned to them by their teacher. In addition, they always have the option to sharpen their math operations fluency by completing Fact Practices. Each activity that teachers assign features a series of assessment items for students to answer. Students can use the drawing feature to sketch out their work, write notes, and drag and drop virtual manipulatives on to their canvas. They can also choose to have the question read aloud to them and watch a short video clip that provides support on the given topic. Students earn and lose virtual coins based on their performance on their assignments. These coins serve as both a classroom leaderboard, as well as currency to spend in the Piggy Store for upgrading their avatar’s appearance.

In addition to the online math practice that Front Row offers, teachers can browse through a library of inquiry-based, multi-day math assignments called Group Lessons. These lessons involve real-world scenarios and encourage student collaboration and exploration. Each lesson includes a summary, a list of the day-to-day objectives, a presentation and video to show students each day, and a daily inquiry sheet to print out and have students complete. Examples of topics for these Group Lessons include Opening a Pizza Shop, Touch Screen Technology, Observing the Night Sky, and Cancer Research.

Front Row also covers K-8 ELA Common Core standards through its collection of informational articles and corresponding assignments. Teachers can access a library of articles, browsable by anchor skill and genre. Some of the article topics include DNA, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Computer Programming, and Freedom Riders. Every article is available in five different reading levels and includes a corresponding writing prompt and set of comprehension questions. These prompts and questions also adapt as the teacher selects different reading levels. Teachers assign articles to individual students and can designate different reading levels for each student. When assigning articles teachers can choose to assess comprehension, writing, or both. They also have the opportunity to assign different reading levels to each component (comprehension and writing). For teachers who are unsure of their students’ reading levels, Front Row provides a reading diagnostic test that students take when first logging on to their accounts. The results of this test serve as reading level recommendations for each student.

Just like with the math practice, students log on to their own account and are shown all of the ELA activities assigned by their teacher. When they open up one of their assignments, they will be presented with the article on one side of their screen and the multiple choice comprehension questions or writing prompt on the other side. Students submit their answers, including the written prompt, directly from this page. Similar to the math assignment, students earn coins based on their performance and can spend them to customize their avatars.

Besides assigning activities for their students, teachers can log on to their dashboard to view and analyze real-time assignment results and to grade student-submitted ELA writing prompts. On the math side, teachers can view comprehensive student report cards, session reports, small group recommendations, standard analysis per student, sample problems from each standard, and printable practices for students to take home. All of the data reports include snapshot views for a quick look at student progress, in addition to more comprehensive reporting that breaks down performance by various categories, including standard and domain. The ELA reporting is somewhat less comprehensive, providing reports on each student assignment, as well as breakdowns of each student’s performance with comprehension and writing anchor skills.

Teachers can sign up for Front Row at no cost, however they will not have access to all of the features. A free subscription includes full access to the interactive math practices, a limited number of math group lessons and benchmark assessments, and 5 ELA articles per month. The paid School Edition subscription unlocks all features, which includes unlimited math group lessons, math benchmark assessments, and ELA articles, in addition to advanced school-wide reporting for administrators.
