EdProtect is a tool for administrators to monitor student privacy, understand the safety of online classroom technologies, and obtain parental consent, when applicable. It also allows teachers and parents to monitor how different apps and websites are using student data. School leaders and district administrators may purchase EdProtect for an annual license based on student usage.
APPROACH
Teachers and administrators use EdProtect to monitor the privacy of their students’ data. To do this, teachers select the ‘AppsWebsite’ tab in their menu to view Operator Privacy Quality Scores of all the edtech products their students are using in school. For each app or website, EdProtect provides parents with a rating to show the safety and privacy of their child’s personal data. The Privacy Qualify Scoring System is configured based on the app or website’s adherence to COPPA, FERPA, and other government laws regarding student data privacy. For each tool, EdProtect provides both this score as well as an explanation, informing users about what personal information is being collected, how the data is being used, and for how long it is collected. Based on this information, users can make a decision as to whether or not they should continue using the technology.
Using EdProtect, educators can also create and distribute consent forms to parents. Users copy or upload their existing documents and add the text and signature fields required, or create a new form using a form-building tool. Parent contact lists can be imported from a Student Information Systems (SIS). After the forms are sent to parents, they are electronically signed, returned and filed. The tool tracks which forms are completed or incomplete, and notifies administrators on their dashboard immediately. All tracking reports can be exported into an Excel file. From the parent dashboard, parents view which forms need to be signed and which have been completed. They then sign and submit their forms from their dashboard.
WHO’S USING IT
As of June 2016, over 30,000 students, teachers and administrators have used EdProtect.
