Manages reading assignments, allowing teachers to integrate media & quizzes into ebooks

Overview

Curriculet is a digital reading platform where digital texts – from novels to USA TODAY articles – have an interactive layer of questions, quizzes, annotations, and multimedia. Data dashboards allow teachers to track standards attainment and personalize learning for students. Curriculet can be used in any subject from grades 3-12+.

Approach

While reading a text on Curriculet, students are assessed with standards-aligned questions and build background knowledge with multimedia annotations that pop-out of the margins of their text. Every text on Curriculet comes with standards-aligned assessment and reading support directly embedded into the digital text. Teachers can adapt these layers to differentiate learning for different students. Schools and districts can adapt these layers to match curricular needs and push the texts out to teachers.

Curriculet allows teachers to track if students completed a reading, their scores on the reading, and standards attainment. This data can be reviewed at the class or individual level.

Students can create and save their own annotations in the text. They receive immediate feedback on how they’re doing and can track their personal standards attainment success.

Students can also read independently from an on-demand library and a set of USA TODAY digital articles. Every article in the USA TODAY digital newspaper has been curated for schools and includes in-text questions focused on an individual informational text standard. Articles are published 12-24 hours after breaking. The on-demand library allows students to choose books with personalized guidance on reading level appropriateness. Independent reading books include a layer of standards-aligned questions, quizzes, and annotations.

Implementation

Curriculet is available on any modern browser. It also supports Google and Clever SSO.

Product Brief

Curriculet, originally called Gobstopper, lets teachers integrate multimedia components into electronic books to support student learning as they read a text. These items can include video snippets of teachers explaining parts of a text, quizzes to check comprehension, vocabulary and other items that might have once been available separately or not at all.

The product was created by former principal and English teacher, Jason Singer. He has said that his goal is to "flip reading instruction in the same way Khan Academy flipped how we teach math." The way to do this, Singer says, is to let teachers place questions, quizzes and other media directly into the texts their students are reading, precisely where they believe kids should interact with the material.

He observed that it is difficult for teachers to assess how much students understand -- or are even engaged -- literary assignments. In addition, teachers typically spend big blocks of time grading written assignments.

By enabling teachers to insert short quizzes for comprehension directly in texts, Curriculet can help teachers spot students who are struggling (or not engaging in the texts at all). Links to Common Core standards are included as well.

In Spring 2012 Singer teamed up with Mauricio Alvarez to develop the technology behind what would eventually become Curriculet. The company was incorporated in Summer 2012, and the first teacher feedback sessions followed in the Fall. The public Beta for Curriculet opened in March 2013.

Curriculet (then Gobstopper) debuted openly during the summer of 2013 and initially used public domain books such as The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, The Raven and Shakespeare's plays. In November 2013, Singer announced a partnership with Harper Collins to make that publishers' titles available to schools via Curriculet. Schools can "buy" texts for a period of time (say, $1.99 per book per student for three months and $2.99 per book per student for a year.) At launch, the company also ran promotional deals making books available for $0.99 and $1.99 for three-month and year-old periods.
