CodeHS teaches students how to code and helps teachers learn how to teach code through online courses. All CodeHS courses use video lessons along with coding exercises and tutoring to teach the fundamentals of computer science. Each course can either be licensed by schools or purchased by individuals.
GOALS
CodeHS teaches students and teachers the basics of coding through video lessons, in-browser practice, and personal help. CodeHS was started to teach students anywhere how to code.
APPROACH
For students, CodeHS offers introductory courses in computer science and SQL, as well as a course on AP Computer Science in Java. Each course is comprised of web-based videos, graded exercises, and teacher tools. Introduction to Computer Science and AP Computer Science are both year long classes, while Introduction to SQL takes 6-8 weeks to complete. In line with CodeHS’ mission, every course is designed to be taught in school, compared to other online courses which primarily focus on teaching curriculum outside the classroom.
For educators, CodeHS offers Teaching Intro Computer Science (PD Course) to equip teachers who lack coding experience with the skills and knowledge needed to teach an introductory computer science class. The course, which takes 30-40 hours online, teaches coding fundamentals, including how to debug programs. It also covers strategies for teaching computer science in a classroom.
IMPLEMENTATION
All CodeHS courses are browser-based.
PRICING
CodeHS’ courses can either be licensed by schools on a classroom basis or purchased on an individual basis. It costs $2000 per classroom to license Introduction to Computer Science. AP Computer Science can be licensed for $3000 per classroom. For individuals, Introduction to Computer Science costs either $150, $399, or $1499. The later two options include extra services like personal feedback and tutoring. Finally, Teaching Intro Computer Science costs $1000 per school to purchase for schools.
WHO IS USING IT
Over 50,000 students have learned the fundamentals of computer science through CodeHS.
I didn't have the coding experience needed to teach Intro to Computer Science and AP Computer Science, but CodeHS fulfilled that need plus an abundance of additional support.
