Desktop computer virtualization uses a server to enable old PCs to run new programs

CloudReady is a cloud-based operating system designed to transform a PC or Mac into a full Google Chromebook platform. The product aims to provide schools with a cheaper technology alternative than purchasing new Chromebooks. After installation, teachers are provided access to various Google Apps and tools, and can manage all CloudReady users in the classroom, CloudReady requires a licence to use.

CloudReady for Educators was designed specifically to bring an organized technology system into K-12 classrooms. After installation, CloudReady transforms the PC/Mac into Chromium, Google Chromebook’s open-source operating system. Users will be able to access all Google and Chromebook features including Drive, Gmail, and Google Games. Teachers can manage CloudReady users along with Chromebook users and can separately purchase Google’s Management Console (from Google).

CloudReady can be installed onto over 165 different certified operating systems, including Macs. Different instructions for installation are available here depending on the certified model. CloudReady can only be installed via USB-boot, using a USB with at least 8GB in storage. Insert this CloudReady Installer and reboot the host machine from USB. A video tutorial on this process can be found here.

After completion, users will be prompted to login to a Gmail or Google Domain according to Google Chrome’s enrollment instructions. Using most of CloudReady’s Google applications require an internet connection. CloudReady installation erases all documents and memory from the host computer.

Detailed instructions can be found here.

CloudReady offers two licenses: $25 per device per year and $59 per device perpetual license with 4-year Neverware customer support. The Google Management Tool must be purchased separately as well as specific Google services.
