Catherine, Teacher - Team Leader. School Type: Elementary School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: Each year we make cards for kids to help create classes. The cards contain academic as well as behavior issues. The cards are used to create classes then not used beyond September. Then we use different tools to discuss the same information as the students in a cumbersome multiplatform way as the year continues. I would like to use the tool to create a card for the student at the site level, have the card transferrable within the school or district as students transfer. I would store intervention data both academically and behaviorally as the student travels through the year. At the end of the year, the card could be used to form the next years class and continue with the student and be an active document not just a static one like the paper cards we have now. If the digital cards could be sorted as the students progress through the school year in team meetings at grade levels to be used to monitor progress, that would be great.

Strengths: I was so pleased to talk with Mike who was so interested in feedback and willing to integrate suggestions.

Suggestions for Improvement: 1. I would include functionality to allow other teachers on my team to see my "card deck" so we could talk as a team about our kids.
2. I would like to be able to sort kids in the school year using the app. I would like to be able to sort kids based on any of the identifiers on the card currently and the custumizable ones that schools can add.
3. Sometimes kids have multiple identifiers. The color coding is good, but if we could add patterns, outlines etc so I could identify the ELLs who are also special ed and speech visually, it would be helpful.

Verdict: This application would save teacher time each year and insure students placement equity considering the multiple variables that have to be considered.

Doloumar, Santiago High School. School Type: High School, College Prep School

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would specifically use it to group my students heterogenously in the classroom for team activities. This can also help me decide to ensure that the classroom is conducive to learning by making using the student data for behavior.

Strengths: This product easily helps the teacher group the students easily. It also helps the teachers in terms of classroom management.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would like to suggest the following:
1. Please a platform for high school.
2. Please have a more "objective" rubric for assigning the points for the students.
3. A typical highschool classroom would have around 35-40 students, hopefully it would fit it in the screen.

Verdict: I would recommend it because it is very easy to use. It is very easy on the eyes. The data on student profile in terms of their achievement and behavior can easily be accessed.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: End of the year to make up next year's classes.

Strengths: It takes the work out for the teachers at the end of year trying to make all classes equal. It will also take less time. It would be convenient for the teachers trying to make sure each class had equal number of each type of student.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would make it cheaper because I don't think most administrators will be willing to invest in it. I would also change the colors of some of the categories just so they match what we currently use at our school site to make it more familiar. And lastly I would maybe offer a first time free trial before charging a fee.

Verdict: I would recommend it because it would easier for teachers and definitely quicker to make up the classes. It would also insure that the classes are more equal with all types of students.

B, Teacher. School Type: Middle School

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would use this product to help form classes by semester or year.

Strengths: This product works very well in the elementary setting because teachers/admin can set the various factors for the heterogenous classroom composition.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would like to see this product work for middle schools. It would require a lot more work, but the complexities of making a master schedule are such that a product like this that would work with our SIS would almost be priceless.

Verdict: This product gives data each time a change is made to class composition. It is much more effective because the users can immediately see the impact of a decision to move one student.

Usage: I would use this product to look at student information, mostly helpful past information that I'd want to look up for specific students. It's very convenient and especially helpful for administrators when composing classes. It saves a lot of time and it takes away the thinking process and might be better at keeping track of information. I like it because you can see every detail of a students information without having to open a file, just by click of a mouse!

Strengths: It solves the problem of time being wasted and it successfully will put students together that should be together and the ones who shouldn't should be apart. I think mistakes may be eliminated and less time consuming definitely.

full starfull starfull starfull starfull star Advocate

Usage: I would use this product when forming classes or intervention groups.

Strengths: So often the d of the year classroom placement of students is unorganized and overwhelming. Kids, that shouldn't be together are accidentally placed together and often times classes are unbalnced on so many levels. This program would virtually eliminate those problems.

Kenny, Teacher. School Type: Elementary School

Usage: This would replace the time-consuming way of class building that involves filling out paperwork, sorting the paperwork, tallying to see if classes are similar, and adjusting classes as needed.

Strengths: The building of classes is a great time save. The colors help you see if classes are balanced. And there is still flexibility to adjust classes.

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would recommend this product to principals.

Strengths: What I liked most about Class Composer is its ability to customize for criteria that might be school-specific. The authors of the product were already very thoughtful and knowledgable about what concerns go into building classes fairly but my school can also include "High Maintenance Parents" or "Students with Special Concerns"

Suggestions for Improvement: I think Class Composer is a little expensive. I would be interested in a District license. Also, Class Composer should communicate directly with SIS.

Verdict: I would recommend this product to principals to save time creating classes. Class Composer would also provide a safety net for fairness in building classes. Finally, Class Composer is easy to access and would not get lost among all a teacher's other paper materials.
