Class Composer allows teams of elementary school teachers to create class lists easily. Teachers use imported data and the tool’s interface to visually assign students to teachers. Class Composer is available as a free trial for one grade or for paid use for a whole school.
IMPLEMENTATION
Teacher teams begin the Class Composer process by customizing and inputting student variables. Teachers fill out a rubric for each student: A student’s gender and current teacher are included, as well as subjective scores for performance in various subjects and behavior. Finally, characteristics like ELL are noted for each student. The program comes with a set of characteristics (e.g. ELL, 504 plan, etc.) but schools can add their own as necessary (e.g. in a special reading group, etc.). Finally, teachers can mark parent requests for a particular teacher, or requests to be separated from, or kept with, other students.
Once all students have been added to the system, teams use Class Composer’s display to assign students to teachers. Each student is represented as a “card,” much like a Trello board. As teachers drag a student’s card from class to class, the tool automatically updates stats for a class at the top of the screen. Requests for students to be included in a class or to be separated from other students are displayed visually as a teacher attempts to move the card (see demo video above).
