Usage: I would use this interactive learning platform to enrich my social studies curriculum. I currently pull from Google and YouTube to supplement read alouds, which can be time consuming because they're are too many resources to filter through. I like that CICERO kids has already compiled images, songs, and text to create a common core aligned resource for teachers and families. The text to speech feature would be great for my kindergarten students because it would provide access to more complex text. The translation feature would be awesome for my non-English speaking families because it would allow them to participate in their child's learning.

The translation feature would be awesome for my non-English speaking families because it would allow them to participate in their child's learning.

Suggestions for Improvement: I was not clear as to how the assessments are tracked per user. It would be great if students could see their progress to motivate them to continue learning and filling the gaps in their understanding. It would also be nice if new activities and resources were suggested based on the students' performance on an assessment. I would also suggest adding more early childhood resources and lessons such as community helpers, comparing then to now, and transportation. This is a great resource, but I would be more willing to purchase if there were more resources for my grade level.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School

Usage: I would use this tool in place of textbooks during social studies and language arts in order to integrate social studies context into reading and writing.

Strengths: This program is interactive for students to use and more motivating to use than a textbook. There is a lot of information for teachers to use in order to broaden their own knowledge of social studies content knowledge.

Suggestions for Improvement: 1. Provide information specifically to Maryland- regions, history, etc. 2. Translate the program into multiple languages 3. Create leveled reading text for reading groups.

Verdict: This tool is more motivational for students to use in order to obtain social students content information instead of using textbooks. I would recommend this tool for teachers to use in order to obtain a plethora of resources in order to integrate social studies content.

Library Media Specialist, School Type: Elementary School, Middle School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would use this program with my class for common core curriculum for support in the following critical areas such as reading.

Strengths: The Ciero Kids program is a wonderful program that teaches problem solving and and critical thinking skills. Students learning to interact with program in a way that they would if they were reading text and interacting with the text.

Suggestions for Improvement: If i were to make an improvement for several things that the program could use it would be to shorten the length of time it takes for the students to get to another level in the game.

Verdict: If I were to recommend this product to an administrator I would advocate it because the program emphasize the skills needed for students for close reading instruction; organization, and literacy.

Dave, Technology. School Type: Elementary School, Blended Learning

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would use the program as a way to create an interactive engaging learning environment for my students. I would work with classroom teachers to integrate into my technology class.

Strengths: The layout is engaging. The idea of being in a museum and exploring would be exciting to students. The fact that there are so many languages available would help our English language learners.i think

Suggestions for Improvement: Having an app would be a great addition.

Verdict: The program offers content that teaches social studies while integrating language arts and reading.

Margaret, Teacher. School Type: High School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starno starno star Neutral

Usage: I would use this program to beef up my teacher resources such as readings and textbooks. This would be used for the history resources. There are activity a for students to complete after reading.

Strengths: This is a great source for readings and document based material. It also has many primary sources for students to be introduced to. It also reads the text that you highlight. The text can be translated into many different languages.

Suggestions for Improvement: Students are not able to interact with the technology and it is all teacher centered. There is no online interaction with the students. Everything is printed out for the students. This is not for students that are struggling with reading or special education. This is also a program that you must pay for which is limited

Verdict: If you are looking for more text and resources this a great program for you. Has a lot of multi-media and pictures. They do not let students do anything on the computer. Everything must be printed out and given handouts for them to complete.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, High ELL Population, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starno starno star Neutral

Usage: I would use this as a resource for myself to find documents, images, & artifacts when teaching SS content.

Strengths: There is a lot of valuable, usable information in one place, which is nice. Rather than hunting around on the Internet, it seems that these are trustworthy resources.

Suggestions for Improvement: 1- smoother, updated, more kid-friendly platform, so teachers and students can both benefit fully from the resources. 2- make the documents more interactive, highlight, take notes on a smartboard or tablet, & then print docs & notes 3- make it more 3D, start in the museum, then click to go back in time & enter the period to experience & "find" these artifacts

Verdict: There are a lot of good resources, but the platform is outdated & needs to be more interactive for 21st century learners. Kids should be excited and able to navigate themselves.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starno starno star Neutral

Usage: If j were to use this product, I would use it to help the students in all subject areas.

Strengths: The content areas are well put together, however I feel that there are better products that provide a similar service

Suggestions for Improvement: Ease of use for students could be improved. Teacher data could have more information. More detailed options for students/parents/teachers.

Verdict: I feel that there are better products available with easier interfaces to allow for teachers and students to access information and subject content.

STAT Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, 1:1 Devices, Blended Learning

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: This product could be used as an extesion piece during rotations or small group. I would not use the product as a whole group teaching piece.

Strengths: The program offered a great level of resources. There was an option for histories, plays, and poems. Students will have the expereince to explore with different types of text. Questions are offered for each type of text along with an answer key. There were also options for challenges and quizzes.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would offer more support for teachers on ways they could futher plan for instruction. It seemed like the teacher version was the same as the student version. I think the student version should offer more photographs and/or text features for the text that is provided. If the students are reading about a particular subject, maybe some space for vocabulary could be offered.

Verdict: The program did not seem engaging to the students. The opening scene with the Museum lobby was the most attractive part. While the program offered a lot of resources, I was unable to find differentiation in text or places for the program to be interactive. I would have also like to see some sort of data collection for teachers so that they could plan for future lessons. I did like the options for students to listen to the text. The text is highlighted as the story is read.

STAT Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, Low Income Population, Blended Learning

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: I would use this product blend language arts with technology. This site allows students to access social studies content through videos, plays, and poems. I would use this product during my play and poem unit in language arts.

Strengths: The product does a good job of blending reading and language arts. I like how the literature piece is strong.

Suggestions for Improvement: #1- include more pictures and color on the resources #2- include tools to use on the actual resources (poems and plays) #3- differentiate the reading resources ( there should be more levels for each resources so it is tailored to different reading levels)

Verdict: This product is not student friendly. The file folder system is not interactive. The pages do not allow students to highlight or write on them while reading. I would love for there to be a sticky not option. This would allow students to take notes while they are reading. I would like to see more pictures and color within the file folders. The main page is engaging, but the whole site should be interactive too.

Michelle, Teacher. School Type: Elementary School, 1:1 Devices

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: This product is not user friendly. The kids are in a museum setting and they click on characters and read articles about them then answer questions. This is not engaging for young ones! They need games, video, and projects to do!

Strengths: There are articles for a variety of social studies topics. There are also questions for each article that teachers can use for grades. However, students can not use the article to search for answers and that is a big skill that we use in reading.

Suggestions for Improvement: First, games! Little ones need games, activities, and videos to keep them engaged. If I had a classroom full of student no one would pick this activity because it is not engaging. Also, they need content in local geography, national, and world. This is a huge skill for kids!

Verdict: I would not recommend it because it is not kid friendly. They did not take into account what students need to learn most about. There are articles about famous people and some good assessments but no games!

Erin, 3rd Grade Teacher. School Type: Elementary School, BYOD Devices

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: The general content (at least for my grade level) wasn't practical. It didn't have enough content for the ones I did look at that would make it worthwhile. I see it more for teachers than kids.

Strengths: I liked the one activity I explored - it covered multiple subjects and was interactive. The general idea is there.

Suggestions for Improvement: 1. Price - I would not expect to pay that much for a product that offers too little and still has room to grow. 2. Content - organizing the lessons and the meat of the lessons. It is a starter for a lesson but isn't what I would consider "good teaching" 3. Interface - it's difficult to use for an adult, let alone a child. The content needs to be more kid friendly.

Verdict: It needs some extra love as far as how the content is displayed. I would want to see more engagement for the students. It just doesn't seem ready for the market yet compared to what is already out there.

Kelly, 5th grade teacher/technology liaison. School Type: Elementary School, Low Income Population

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: This product doesn't seem to have updated recently, and was not working properly when we went by.

Strengths: This product provides access to resources and content related to Social Studies, that can sometimes be difficult to find online (especially all in one location). It does present it in a format that is appealing to the kids-to make them feel like they are looking through a museum.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would make this product more interactive and customizable for students. Many other products allow students to design an avatar, and receive points for the amount of information they access, or for answering assessment questions collecting. It would also be helpful to have online assessments that automatically collect data in an easy to view format for teachers.

Verdict: The technology is not up to date, and is not something that would be easy to use in the classroom.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, High ELL Population, Low Income Population

full starfull starno starno starno star Wouldn't Advocate

Usage: I think this product needs alot of work. It has some good content but it is basically using worksheets on a device. There is nothing engaging or interactive about the product for students.

Strengths: I think that it provides social studies content online. I wonder what standards it aligns to? It provides poetry and plays to students.

Suggestions for Improvement: 1. Visual Appeal- It's basically a word document on a device. 2. Tools- There are no tools for students to use for students, like highlighting. 3. Students love games and incentives- there are no games or incentives with this program.

Verdict: I just think that it seems like they have uploaded poems or plays and students are reading off of the device. We could easily google search the same poem.

Teacher, School Type: Elementary School, High ELL Population

full starfull starfull starfull starfull star Advocate

Usage: I would use it to teach reading and social studies. It would helpe teach pretty much every skill in reading, including vocabulary, comprehension, close reading etc

Strengths: Provides lots of reading passages which could've translated into multiple languages, provide audio for every passage, brilliant! Solves the problem of manually translating passages, tons of time looking for resources aligned with standards

Suggestions for Improvement: Make it more interactive. Students should be able to write their answers on an interactive white board instead of having to print out questions on paper. The ability to translate just one word into another language, provide assessments which could be automatically graded and direct feedback provided.

Verdict: Our school doesn't have a good interactive program for reading and social studies. This is great because it already has built in lesson plans. In addition, all written text could be translated into multiple languages. This is a brilliant idea! Our ELL population could really use this. Their parents who do not read or speak English could finally have enough support to assist their kids at home!

Gillian, Teacher. School Type: Elementary School

full starfull starfull starfull starfull star Advocate

Usage: I like the Multimedia digital resources that integrate literacy skills into social studies. I like the lesson plans, books lists, videos etc that are available in different languages.

Strengths: It solves the problem of needing to teach social studies to students who speak different languages. It seems like it also is a good way to teach literacy skills through social studies. I think the students would like the engaging pictures and the game based forum.

Suggestions for Improvement: It would be great if the social studies lessons were multiple reading levels for different learners.

Verdict: None

Emily, Teacher. School Type: Middle School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starfull starfull star Advocate

Usage: Co planning with he English teacher on the middle school team. We could create lessons together that will allow for analysis and can be used for our English language learners

Strengths: Primary sources and maps Helps with cross curriculum and co planning

Suggestions for Improvement: Nobe

Verdict: Would help improve our critical thinking skills and reading and writing. It is cross curricular and will give students a variety of tools to analyze primary sources and maps

Special Educator, School Type: High School, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I teach two Social Studies courses and two English courses to students who have emotional, academic, and behavioral challenges at the high school level.

Strengths: It makes learning fun for the student and the teacher.

Suggestions for Improvement: Provide districts with a free 90 day trial that can be disseminated to the schools so that at least the lead content teachers can make it accessible to the classroom teacher. Supply activities at the low, middle, and high reading/writing levels Allow teachers to rate this product quarterly.

Verdict: Students vary in academic level and ability. Cicero Kids provides a fun, interactive way for students to digest a seemingly bland content. It also allows the instructor to monitor student progress and collect other meaningful data.

Special Educator, School Type: Elementary School, High ELL Population, Low Income Population

full starfull starfull starfull starno star Advocate

Usage: I would use it to supplement our social studies program. I would use it as a center in the morning and have a group rotate through it each morning. I would link it to my lessons as closely as possible.

Strengths: Lots of great modalities. Videos, audio and pictures. Wonderful.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would like the pictures larger in the civil war room. It was hard to see the pictures so far away. Can it work on a touch screen? I would like data tracking of what students did.

Verdict: Plays and poems are an important part of the common core curriculum. I would try and link it to my lesson planning.

Heather, Librarian. School Type: Middle School, 1:1 Devices, BYOD Devices, Blended Learning

full starfull starfull starno starno star Neutral

Usage: As a school librarian I am responsible for providing curricular resources for teachers and students. I would see this as a tool I would purchase for my SS department.

Strengths: I like that there were two versions of this product and there were ample resources for each tool including interactives, lesson plans, and videos. I also liked that the interactives were HTML5 based.

Suggestions for Improvement: I would strongly prefer a student interface allowing teachers to create a playlist of resources for teachers to use. This seems pricey - particularly because some of the resources are available on the web for free.

Verdict: I will be signing up for the trial and allow my teachers to determine whether this is something they would like. My only reservation is the limited options for students, and most of the resources are directed at the teacher. Since may of the resources are in the public domain, I would see some pushback from administration in purchasing resources that are free.
