Chalkable is a web platform for schools with basic gradebook, attendance, calendar, reporting, messaging, and app store features. New York entrepreneurs Zoli Honig and Michael Levy created and developed Chalkable in 2012 at the 500 Startups incubator as a way for teachers to centralize the web-based applications they use in their classrooms and integrate them into their workflow.
After a school administrator or other authorized purchaser signs up for an annual license, teachers gain access to their dashboard, from which they can manage student and class profiles. From their dashboard, teachers can track attendance, manage discipline referrals, view a calendar, and send messages to students. They also manage their students’ workflows by managing a “feed” of tasks, quizzes, essays, assignments, or announcements, which their students can access from their logins. To add items to the feed, teachers select the classes to which the item applies, write descriptions, assign due dates, set reminders, and attach files or apps. Once created, feed items are displayed on teacher and student dashboards until resolved, changed, or deleted.
Chalkable allows teachers to add assignments to their feed from a number of web-based apps. Teachers access Chalkable’s app store to navigate a library of third-party apps, which they can download or purchase. Apps in the library can be filtered by subject or price and sorted by popularity, and contain brief descriptions, videos, and user ratings, similar to other mobile app stores like Google Play or iTunes. Once an app has been added to the profile, teachers can tag lessons or modules and add them to their feed. To enable app purchases, a school’s authorized purchaser can preload and manage users’ app budgets.
In addition to providing access to teachers, Chalkable allows students and school administrators to access features specific to their needs. Students view their feeds, upload assignments, and respond to messages through their logins while School administrators are able to view grade, attendance, and discipline reports for the whole school.. Teacher and administrators can manage student lists and class profiles. Future versions are scheduled to include parent and district administrator dashboards.
Chalkable received "honorable mention" in the New York City Gap App Challenge.
Acquired by STI in December 2013.
