Canter is a distributer of graduate-level courses for K-12 teachers. The company has been involved in the professional development sector since 1976 and is owned by Laureate Education Inc, whose K-12 business was sold and became Sylvan Learning.
Canter provides two different types of courses for teachers to take online; short self-paced one credit courses or 10 week three credit courses. The self paced courses involve reading one of the 17 designated books, such as ‘Discipline in the Secondary Classroom’ or ‘The Teacher’s Technology Survival Guide.’ Once students enroll in the course they are asked to read the book, and respond to a series of assignments related to the book within six weeks. These courses cost $150 and are all facilitated online. Once complete, students are awarded one graduate credit through Walden University.
Canter also provides longer courses focused on practical classroom skills. These courses can be taken online, or through video or DVD. The courses are a combination of lectures, videos of master teachers modeling concepts, discussion boards, and activities. Participants are expected to come up with their own plan of how they will integrate concepts into their classrooms. These courses cost $510.
Students can choose from three to five courses on topics such as:
Assessment and Curriculum
Reading and Literacy
Principal and School Leaders
- Special Education
