Leveled, adaptive CCSS-based science articles for reading comp & subject-specific vocab

Overview

BirdBrain Science is a web-based tool that utilizes science-related articles to assess individual students’ critical reading skills. Students read articles that are aligned with the Common Core and organized by their teachers, and complete a quiz after each reading to assess and record their literary growth and understanding. BirdBrain Science requires a license to use.

Approach

Teachers can log in from any web browser, online and mobile, and begin assigning articles for their students. Articles range across various science topics, all of which have been created by BirdBrain Education. Teachers can toggle between “standard articles,” which are required for the curriculum and “interest articles,” which are extra practice. In addition, teachers can assign due dates and assessments (multiple choice or free response) after each reading. Reports are broken into “Assignments,” “Classes,” “Students,” and a general “Gradebook,” each tab organizing information to fit the general classroom or specific student for teacher evaluation.

Teachers can add students either individually or with a classroom code. When students log in, they can create a personal profile and complete a diagnostic quiz, which assess the initial reading level of the student. They read required articles and complete the assigned assessment quiz at the end of each reading. Grades for multiple-choice quizzes are recorded in real-time for both the teacher and student to see. Each article can be reread, providing students the opportunity to master the content. The content of all articles is science-based, split into different topics and includes illustrations. The program is currently purposed for 3rd to 8th graders.

Implementation

BirdBrain Science can only be accessed online through a web browser. The site is mobile optimized.

Pricing

The program licenses are broken into a single teacher, school or district licenses. BirdBrain Science offers a two-month free trial (Pilot License). After the trial expires, purchase is required to continue, and educators may choose from different plans. The cost of each single teacher license depends on the plan: a plan for 10 students is $50, 50 students for $200, 100 students for $400, 150 students for $600, and 300 students for $1,200. For a school or district license, educators should contact BirdBrain Education. Each license expires within one academic year (typically July 1st). More information about pricing can be found here.

Who is using it

BirdBrain Science is used by more than 25,000 students and 10,000 teachers.

On of the MAJOR things I would improve to make this product better is to have resources for bilingual students. We have students who will come to the states from a different country. They may know a few English words but 80% of the time they don't know anything. Another thing I would change is ad...

1) Add history! this is an area that my kids really struggle with, especially on state testing.
2) Allow teachers to select the reading level for a student when they want too, as sometimes we need to practice reading materials that are on grade level - this is what they will be seeing on their s...
