Bettermarks is a collection of over 100 adaptive math lessons, containing over 100,000 math questions for topics in grades 4-10. Teachers can assign lessons to their class, or students can work individually with the program. Bettermarks is currently available in twelve countries and four languages.
APPROACH
Bettermarks has features for both students and teachers.
Students use the program to learn and review mathematical concepts on a computer or tablet. For each exercise, the program leads the student step by step and can observe where a student is having difficulty, offering tips to move the student forward. If a student makes a mistake, the program will give feedback and an explanation to fix the error as well as give further examples and exercises. Bettermarks recognizes gaps in students’ conceptual math knowledge and gives extra exercises to close the gaps. The program covers topics in the areas of basic computation, algebra, geometry and statistics, and trigonometry.
Teachers can use Bettermarks in various ways. An instructor can connect the program to a projector or SmartBoard in the classroom and use the lessons to initially teach a concept. From there, teachers can assign lessons to students, whether that be the entire class, small groups, or individual students. The Bettermarks program automatically tracks who is doing the assignments and corrects the work. The program creates reports which teachers can use to evaluate which students are understanding which concepts. This information can be used to decide whether to review or reteach a topic, or if the class can move on.
