Product Brief

Goals

The ACT Career Curriculum supports adult learners in building foundational skills so they can be successful in the workplace. The curriculum aims to improve America’s workforce including students getting ready to enter the workforce and existing employees.

Approach

The Program

The ACT Career Curriculum is a learning management system that offers courses focused on career and workplace skills, as well as progress reporting on each user. There are three course bundles available: ACT KeyTrain, ACT Soft Skills Suite, and ACT Career Ready 101.

ACT KeyTrain

ACT KeyTrain is a collection of courses designed to build foundational career readiness and cognitive skills. The courses are based on the skills covered by the ACT WorkKeys assessment. KeyTrain also offers a Job Profile Database, where learners can explore different careers and their requirements to determine which skills are needed for each job. KeyTrain course offerings include:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Applied Technology–Electricity
  • Applied Technology–Mechanics
  • Applied Technology–Thermodynamics
  • Applied Technology–Fluids
  • Business Writing
  • Listening
  • Listening for Understanding
  • Locating Information
  • Observation
  • Reading for Information
  • Teamwork
  • Workplace Observation
  • Writing

The Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information courses also serve as preparation for the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate, which provides adult learners with certification for their workplace skills. Many ACT KeyTrain users choose to use these three courses.

Each course begins with a pre-test, which places students at the right starting point in the curriculum. Then each learner begins to move through the curriculum at his/her own pace. Learners have the option of turning on the audio function, so that the curriculum is read aloud. Each course has practice questions (including multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, and drag and drop), and each topic ends with a quiz. There is also a final quiz that incorporates content from all of the topics. KeyTrain administrators can access reports on student progress as learners work through their coursework.

ACT Soft Skills Suite

The ACT Soft Skills Suite launched in April 2014, and targets job-seekers and prospective employees. The suite includes five online courses that are self-paced and can be taken on any device with content covering skills that affect job performance and that hiring managers look for. These skills span communication, critical thinking, collaboration, customer service, and work habits.

ACT Career Ready 101

ACT Career Ready 101 is a program that supports adult learners in exploring careers, and preparing to successfully go through the job-seeking process. The coursework helps prepare learners for the ACT WorkKeys assessment, and the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate.

The program includes all KeyTrain courses, as well as all courses from the Soft Skills Suite. There are two additional courses called “The Job Search,” and “Financial Awareness.” The program also provides support for resume writing (a resume builder) and an interest profiler, which provides recommendations for careers based on a series of questions answered by the learner. The Job Profile Database from KeyTrain is also included in Career Ready 101.

Implementation

The ACT Career Curriculum is used at community colleges, high schools, adult education programs, non profit organizations, and some businesses. Many KeyTrain users typically use the three courses that apply to the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate: Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Mathematics.
