OER All the Way

OER ALL THE WAY: For all the conversation around Open Education Resources, educators are still figuring out how to use the available tools. One school at the very bleeding edge is the Open High School of Utah. This charter school, based in Salt Lake City, opened its virtual doors to students in 2009; this past school year, the school had about 400 full-time enrollment high school students. About 90% of the coursework is OER-based materials, according to this report by THE Journal; the school relies on materials created by groups including CK-12 and OER Commons. OER, notes Open High director DeLaina Tonks, is both a blessing and curse: “It's as if a bunch of people dumped their ‘toolboxes’ all over the garage floor. The hard part is going in and picking up each piece, assessing it, and deciding if it's the right tool for what our teachers are trying to accomplish.” Full story here.
