MAKER BREAKER: Alice Waters introduced gardens to schools across America; Make’s Dale Dougherty wants to create “Makerspaces.” Makerspaces aim to be safe places for tinkering, particularly in high schools. Dale helped get one started this past year in a traditional public high school in Sebastapol. His plans call for starting 10 more this year. A Makerspace is a spot with enough elbow room (and decent ventilation) to allow students to work--and to keep half-made projects and a few tools. In this San Francisco Chronicle piece, Betsy describes the 10-item “starter” list of the tools needed to get a Makerspace going.

Dale will be talking in the DIY Pavilion on Saturday at 1:30; there will also be a “make a Maker Space” display there all weekend. Oh, and there’s even a free playbook! Here it is!
