Make Yourself

May 30, 2012

MAKE YOURSELF: Amidst the Maker Faire madness last week came the announcement of the Maker Education Initiative, sponsored by Cognizant, Intel, and O'Reilly Media. The subtitle: "Every Child A Maker." The idea is to create opportunities for every child to learn to build things. One aspect of this broad initiative is an idea called "Makerspaces" in schools. Remember how Alice Waters started the idea of "the edible schoolyard," namely putting gardens into schools? Gardens became magical places where science and nature merged with art and even history; where answers could be discovered. Makerspaces aim to do something similar. By creating a physical space with a few basic tools where students can build projects, the Maker initiative hopes to foster imaginative play and a can-do attitude. Makerspaces can be jumpstarted for $5k, according to founder, Dale Dougherty.
