THE BADGE IS BACK: EverFi has announced the launch of Sash, its open-source badging technology based on the metadata format provided by the Mozilla Open Badge Infrastructure. Quite a mouthful to mean that they're trying to give students credit for both their academic achievement and life-based skills.
Companies can freely check out the platform to create, display, and manage badges for their products; developers should check out the GitHub goodies here. Having a standard platform and source for building and sharing badges is a great step toward alternative accreditation, though we wonder: which authority will determine the legitimacy or value of these badges?
"We're not convinced an accrediting agency is necessary," says Jenny Sykes, EverFi's senior director of marketing. Each organization that issues badges will have its own reason for offering badges. Some, like many of EverFi's badges, will be based on education results driven by sn assessment. But others will be deemed valuable for other reasons. Ultimately the goal of the digital CV or a collection of badges is to allow the market to help determine the value of these new skills."
