S'Cool Tools of the Week: Mathspace, Finny, Kaizena, Get Your Tech On

Sep 4, 2014

FILLIN' UP YOUR TOOLBOX: Ding ding! We've got our favorite edtech teacher and administrator tools for the week right here (as highlighted in our Instruct newsletter). And if you haven't heard, check out our nifty new S’Cool Tools tag on the EdSurge site for the latest and greatest edtech tools. (And yes! Please share your favorites!) Our fave tools for the week are:

Free: Math teachers unite! Even experts in integrating curves appreciate a bit of help integrating math textbooks, student workbooks and teacher gradebooks into their instruction. Mathspace combines all three, enabling you to offer students help at each step along the problem-solving process and grade hand-written work on the cloud-based application. Available for iPad, Android, and Windows.

Free: Are you looking for a way to keep students away from the tempting distractions of devices? With Finny, users “earn” play time on their devices when they score high on educational quizzes. Targeted at 4th to 8th graders, Finny lets teachers customize control settings including what quizzes are pivotal and how often to interrupt play. Available for Android here.

Free: Don’t let the grading blues get you down. Kaizena aims to let you grade student work digitally, attach resources, leave feedback through voice comments and discuss revisions with students, making it a two-way conversation tool. You can also use Kaizena tags to track and rate student progress on skills (like standards or learning objectives).

Free: Looking for PD tools this fall? Check out Get Your Tech On, a series of webinars, how-to guides and other resources from PBS Learning Media. Don’t know where to start? Learn about free tools for the classroom in the “Transform Your Classroom: Digital Resources You Can Use Tomorrow” webinar and the interactive science lessons.
