Amazon Offers All-You-Can-Read Subscription

Jul 20, 2014

READER'S PARADISE: Startups offering a "Netflix for books" service, like Scribd and Oyster, now have a big bully to contend with. Amazon has launched an all-you-can-read subscription service for $9.99/month. The Kindle Unlimited service, available on all Kindle devices along with Kindle apps on the iOS, Android, Windows 8 and other platforms, covers over 600,000 e-books and audiobooks. (Slate estimates the company has over 1 million digital titles.) But, as TIME points out, it doesn't include books from the "Big 5" publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Penguin Random House. Gizmodo says the biggest competitor to Kindle Unlimited may be Amazon itself, since "its offerings overlap so much with Amazon Prime."
