Social Media Leads to Student Lawsuits Against Districts

Mar 27, 2014

STUDENT VS. SCHOOL DISTRICT: Here’s two edtech cases for Judge Judy. A New Jersey student is suing the Sterling High School District after being disciplined for a rude tweet about her principal. In nearby Pennsylvania, a student is suing his school district after he was suspended for a Facebook post. Both lawsuits contend that the punishments violate the students’ First Amendment right, as the tweet and post were both made after school hours and off-campus. On the flip side: aren’t some schools being held accountable by their districts for these issues? Tweet us with your thoughts.
