NovoEd and Carnegie Quantify the Power of Partnerships

Sep 24, 2013

WITH OUR POWERS COMBINED: NovoEd endeavors to champion collaboration and project-based learning as the cornerstone of its MOOCs. The Carnegie Foundation has developed programs to support college-level quantitative literacy and math skill development. On September 24, the two launched a MOOC entitled "Numbers for Life," a free, four-lesson course to support students struggling with college-level math classes. Helping design the course were professors such as Cinnamon Hillyard, associate professor and former chair of the Mathematical Association of America's Special Interest Group on Quantitative Literacy.

This course will not offer any credits. Rather, the feedback from it will inform the design of college-level math MOOCs set to roll out in early 2014, which will repackage Carnegie's Statway (college-level statistics) and Quantway (college-level mathematics) courses into NovoEd MOOCs. According to NovoEd CEO and co-founder Amin Saberi, these for-credit courses will be used in Carnegie's network of roughly 30 community colleges and public universities (including Houston Community College, San Diego City College, and San Jose State University).

NovoEd has produced MOOC's on business, computer science, and medicine--so why the interest in putting together such a course? Saberi describes that low college math scores are "keeping millions of people from completing their two-year degrees, their four-year degrees...from advancing in their education and career."
