San Jose State University's Experiment with Udacity On Hold

Jul 18, 2013

SCHOOL SUSPENSION: The celebrated (or controversial, depending on who you ask) partnership between San Jose State University and Udacity to offer students online, accredited math courses for $150 is on "pause." According to InsiderHigherEd, preliminary findings from the spring semester showed that "Udacity students fared significantly worse than their in-class peers." (74% of students in traditional classes passed, versus 51% for Udacity ones.) SJSU Provost Ellen Junn pointed to the rushed, hasty manner in which the courses were built as a possible factor. She's decided to suspend the online programs in the fall to review results with faculty members, with the intent to give Udacity a second go in spring 2014. (In the meantime, the school will continue to work with edX.)
