Khan: Coming to a City Near You

Jul 9, 2013

This summer, Khan Academy jumps off the computer screen and into live workshops with teachers across the country. They will be bringing their best practices and implementation models to teachers and administrators in one-day, in-person workshops in Redwood City, New Orleans, and Chicago thanks to a grant from The Broad Foundation. The hope is for teachers and administrators to use their day with Khan coaches to develop a plan for implementing and integrating the organization’s videos and evaluation tools into next year’s curriculum and classroom plans.

The free workshops are open to any math teachers with regular access to WiFi and computers. However, fighting for a spot at might be hard, as workshops with over 100 spots in Redwood City and Chicago are already filled up, and New Orleans filling fast.

So why such high demand at a time when teachers should be in the thick of their summer vacation? Maureen Suhendra, who leads education partnerships for Khan Academy, explains the appeal of the in person workshops: “In person PD is very powerful, especially with a blended approach. I think it’s an effective way to make sure teachers take the time to plan out their approach to implementation.”

As Khan Academy continues to move forward into the PD world, will we see more of these pop-up workshops? Perhaps not. The organization is currently exploring ways they can develop certified Khan Academy teachers, who can then go forth and spread the word of Khan. For now, it looks like free Khan training is in high demand. So get it while it’s hot, in these three lucky cities across the country:

  • Redwood City, California - July 9 & 16
  • New Orleans - July 24
  • Chicago - August 8
