MORE REASONS FOR FRIENDS: Over 100 developers and educators across 24 teams gathered for HackEd2.0, a day-long, edtech hackathon at Facebook's HQ, sponsored by the Gates Foundation. (Disclosure: EdSurge has received support from the foundation.) Participants were asked to build apps that leverage users' social network to solve pressing education problems. The winning team, with developers from edtech startup Quizlet, built an app that prompts users to translate a friend's status message in another language in order to unlock a device. (What a great use for some of those nonsensical updates!) Other winners included a team from Facebook that made an app to help students connect with friends to navigate college and career pathways, and another that helps students develop Common Core reading and writing skills by exchanging text and video content with one another on Facebook.
