Latest investments by NewSchools Venture Fund

Dec 5, 2012

KA'CHING: NewSchools Venture Fund's Seed Fund has been hard at work since it officially kicked off early this year. The group now counts more than 20 investments (editor's note: EdSurge is one). The fund typically makes investments of $50K to $100K. Other Silicon Valley angels often follow its lead, too. Although it isn't sharing dollar values yet, its newest investments include:

  • ELLevation: a Boston-based startup exclusively devoted to supporting English Language Learners and their teachers. Its CEO and cofounder is former NSVF partner, Jordan Meranus;
  • Gobstopper: An e-reading platform to help humanities teachers embed questions, quizzes and commentary directly into students' reading materials. It was developed by former English teacher Jason Singer, who also founded two KIPP high schools;
  • LocoMotive Labs: (@LocoMotiveLabs) a Berkeley-based startup working on assistive and play-based applications on iPads for special needs learners;
  • NearPod: a startup based in Florida and Brazil that offers teachers software that lets that create presentations for iPads -- and lets them control their students' iPads as they go through the material.
